The Vacheron Constantin reference 4178 was produced from 1940 until approximately 1964. Collectors prioritize this chronograph for its 36mm case featuring distinct flared "cornes de vache" or cow-horn lugs. The model typically houses the manual-wind Calibre V452 or the later Calibre V492, both based on Valjoux ebauches finished to high standards. While most examples were cased in yellow or rose gold, stainless steel variants are significantly rarer, with fewer than 300 estimated to have been manufactured. Steel versions often feature two-tone dials with pulsometer or tachymeter scales. On the secondary market, stainless steel 4178s occupy a broad price bracket ranging from $150,000 to over $300,000 depending on dial originality and case condition. A notable auction result occurred in 2016 when a steel example with a sector dial sold for over $330,000, reflecting the premium placed on non-precious metal configurations.
